Modern American horror movies are rarely subtle. What goes for “scary” in today’s society is usually a combination of torture porn, manipulative scares and buckets of blood and gore. Most moviegoers have become so accustomed to seeing outrageous levels of violence and monstrosity that they aren’t pleased until they’ve seen levels of grossness that would be nearly impossible to achieve in real life.
